Following is discussion moved here from the Welcome Thread, where it didn't belong.
I'm sorry to learn that this site will be closing soon. I have seen some excellent posts here.
It's important to make the best possible use of every opportunity to learn. And this site provides an excellent opportunity to learn. Particularly when we're still young.

Thanks for your interest. I may consider getting this forum back into gear. I'm not decided.
For the time being, I can recommend the Genius Forum (theabsolute.net/phpBB). If you're looking for high-quality thinking, and passionate philosophising, the Genius Forum is the place to go --- for the time being.
Thanks. I'll check it out. :-)
One thing that I have learned is that one should be very careful about what one says at certain message boards, where one can be banned at the slightest provocation. But I'm sure that that does not apply to this board or to the Genius Forum. :-)
I'm sure that the regulars, both here and at the Genius Forum, being unusually perceptive individuals, long ago realized that we can always learn something useful from others, no matter what the views of those others may be.
We should therefore not deprive ourselves of those opportunities to learn from others merely because those others hold some views which are different from ours. After all, there is no law that says that what we learn from the others must coincide with what the others are trying to teach us. If we really have faith in our beliefs, we should have nothing to fear.
But it's always possible to go too far. Some boards have adopted the policy of not banning anybody no matter what they post, as long as what they post does not violate the board host's conditions of use. I think that policy is insane. Don't you?

With regards to banning, I've banned one account in my lifetime only. So it's not something I do "on the slightest provocation."
This was Ducky M, whose real name is Jesus. He's from a Latin country. Banning Jesus wasn't a decision taken lightly or quickly. He was getting agitated, and unable to focus on the ideas presented. His ego was aroused to an aggressive self-defence pitch, and we were going in circles. Because Jesus is generally a reflective, self-critical person, I considered that he needed a break to get himself back under a control. So I inactivated his account, with a view to reactivating once he'd reachieved a more rational frame of mind. The board was otherwise pretty inactive, and after this it was pretty dead. So I announced the closure, and hadn't the reason to reactivate his account. I'm still encouraging you to give the Genius Forum a go, as I think you'd benefit more from that place.
My approach to banning is the same taken by the Genius Forum administrators. The aim of this board, and that one, is serious philosophy. It's not academic. It's about gaining a perfect intellectual understanding of the nature of Ultimate Reality, and letting that all-important matter change every aspect of one's being and thought. It's not for everyone. Both parts of the task - intellectual, and experiential - involve challenge. It disrupts comfortable habits of thought, and of behaviour. So it is an intrinsically ego-paining endeavour.
This is largely the reason for some of the antagonism you may have noticed in people who aren't ready to have their views challenged. But if one simply submits to their egotistical reactions, nothing will be gained. If you have witnessed children having a tantrum in a supermarket because they aren't allowed lollies, you'll know that the quickest way to quieten the child is not the best way.

C: rofl Oh my...
I'm certainly glad that you have found it necessary to ban only one individual so far.
Yes, I can see by reading the posts by that "Ducky" individual that he was certainly an obnoxious character. But you never know -- he may some day have a change of heart. I hope that you have considered reinstating his posting privileges at your board. :-)
I understand that you yourself have been banned from a certain "KIR" board. If you're interested, perhaps I can help to get your posting privileges reinstated there. :-)
KJ: My approach to banning is the same taken by the Genius Forum administrators.
Nat: Is it? As you know, Robert Larkin and I were summarily ejected from GF last night on charges of "trolling." While I was admittedly using some derisive humor in my posts, I was not trolling and Robert certainly was not.
Being myself a widely recognized expert troller, I can authoritatively affirm that Robert and Nat were not trolling. :-)

benfranq, Jesus has another account "Moebius Duck". I only deactivated Ducky M. He is welcome to use his second account.
However, I haven't decided whether to get the forum into gear. This discussion isn't that interesting to me.
If you are a troller, I haven't seen it yet. But I don't know what your standards are.
This discussion about Jesus doesn't belong in the welcome thread. I'll copy it into the Tavern where it belongs, then delete it in this section of the forum.

Nat, if you have issues with Dan's decision, then I suggest you take it up with him. Derisive humour is your interpretation, but I believe your posts were largely ad hominems towards the end. They lacked substance, and were made up of name-calling. I can understand why strand that would be blocked.
I'm not sure exactly why he deactivated Robert Larkin's account, but I can understand why he might. My suspicion is that he was fed up with Robert's fundamentalist attitude about Buddhism and Daoism. Namely, the belief that Buddhism and Daoism can only be expressed using terms or concepts endorsed by scholars in Wikipedia. It's a religious mentality. He refused to think about the matter, but relied on scripts and external authorities. There's a limit to how far such a discussion can go, and I think it was reached by the time Dan swept in.
Dan doesn't have much patience for idiocy, and I have my limits too.
I'm not interested in discussing this further. The posts in question can be examined at the Genius Forum for anyone who wishes to. There is always openness to genuine, rational discussion, but spiteful name-calling --- no.
